Grant Funds Being Applied for Scrap Computer Collection and Hazardous Waste Collection

The Nebraska Loess Hills RC&D is in the process of making applications to the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality for grant funds to be used to hold:

  • A Scrap Computer Collection, currently being planned for Homer in late summer or early fall, and
  • Household Hazardous Waste Collections are currently being planned for the communities of:
    1. Dakota City
    2. Oakland
    3. Wisner

Should grant funding be approved for these projects, further arrangements will be finalized and promotional materials will be made public.  The HHW collections will probably also take place in late summer or early fall of this year.

Household Hazardous Waste Events

This is the last reminder for the Household Hazardous Waste events organized by the Nebraska Loess Hills Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council.  Three separate events are scheduled:

        October 14, 2016, 3-6:00pm at the Wastewater Plant (Willow & South 16th) in Dakota City;

        October 15, 2016, 8:30-11:00am at the softball fields parking lot (13th St turn East) in Tekamah;

        October 15, 2016, 12:30-3:30pm at the Waste Disposal & Recycling Center (1251 E Sherman) in West Point;

Mark your calendar and bring in paint, pesticides, herbicides, oil, antifreeze, cleaning chemicals, solvents, varnish, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, and car batteries.  The collection is FREE and will accept most household quantities of chemicals.  The collection will NOT ACCEPT tires, electronic equipment, appliances, PCBs, picric acid, science lab materials, radioactive materials or biological hazards.

Collections are open to all households (no businesses!), and participants do not have to live in the town hosting

the event.  Onsite personnel are required to accept and sort hazardous waste as it is received, so items must not be dropped off prior to the scheduled event times.

These collections are a joint effort by The Nebraska Loess Hills RC&D Council, the Papio-Missouri River NRD, the Lower Elkhorn NRD,

City of Dakota City, City of Tekamah, City of West Point, Keep Northeast Nebraska Beautiful and the Winnebago EPA.

This event is funded through a grant from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality.

Haley Hanna Rousek is the November Artist of the Month

Haley Hanna Rousek is the featured Artist of the Month for November. Come see her works of art at the Swedish Heritage Center, 301 N Charde Ave in Oakland, November 1, 2015,11:00a.m-1:00p.m. A turkey dinner will be available for a free will offering. For more information, contact Julie Johnson at 402-685-5652. Haley’s biography is below:

While growing up in Oakland, art was ingrained in me. With an art

teacher and calligrapher for a mother, I had an innate habit of

doodling on anything and everything. I went to the University of

Nebraska-Lincoln where I graduated with a Bachelors in Fine Arts and

emphasis in Graphic Design. While in college, I got my feet wet as a

graphic designer at Student Involvement Information Strategies and

have been working in design ever since.

Currently, I work for Flagship Restaurant Group as a Graphic Designer.

Flagship Restaurant Group is an Omaha-based national restaurant

company committed to delivering innovative food and exceptional dining

experiences. Its concepts include: Blue Sushi Sake Grill, Roja Mexican

Grill, Blatt Beer & Table, Plank Seafood Provisions, Amsterdam Falafel

& Kabob and Flagship Commons (coming late winter 2015). Flagship

Restaurant Group has concepts in five markets over three states

(Nebraska, Texas and Colorado). At Flagship Restaurant Group I am

responsible for design both inside and outside of our restaurants,

including promotional print materials, web graphics and interior art.

Three Free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Coming Up

The Nebraska Loess Hills Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council is coordinating a series of three FREE household hazardous waste collections. Hazardous chemical products can be found in almost every home in Nebraska.  A product is considered hazardous if it can catch fire,   react or explode when mixed with other substances, or if it is corrosive or toxic.  Special handling of hazardous chemical products is required to ensure safe disposal and to protect the environment from possible contamination.  Area residents can dispose of paint, stain, varnish, lawn and garden chemicals, cleaning chemicals, insecticides, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, car batteries, used oil, antifreeze and most other household chemical materials at any of the following three FREE collections:

Friday, October 2nd from 3:00-6:00 p.m.

at the Washington County Recycling Center, 440 S. 3rd St. in Blair.

Saturday, October 3rd from 8:00-9:30 a.m. at the Winnebago Facilities Building in Winnebago

on the west side of Hwy 77 at the south end of Winnebago.

Saturday October 3rd from 12:00-2:00p.m. at North Bend Central High School, 1320 Walnut in North Bend.

These collections will NOT accept tires, electronic equipment, appliances, PCBs, Picric Acid, Science Lab Materials, radioactive materials or biological hazards.

Materials received at these collections will be recycled if possible, or disposed of in a safe and environmentally sensitive manner. These collections are funded through a grant from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality. For more information, contact www.nlhrcd.org or Jean Schultz at the Nebraska Loess Hills RC&D Council office (402)685-4020, email: jschultz @nlhrcd.org.  Volunteers are always needed for these events, please contact Jean Schultz.

Waste Collection October 25th

Gather up old computers, TV’s, microwaves, and electronic devices, working or not, for the Nebraska Loess Hills Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council’s scrap computer/electronics waste collection.  The collection is scheduled for Saturday, October 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the parking lot south of the Nielsen Center, 200 Anna Stalp Avenue, West Point.  The collection will be one block west of the West Point Community Theater. Residents and businesses in  Burt, Cuming, Dakota, Dodge, Thurston and Washington counties can dispose of up to four computer systems (monitor, tower, printer, keyboard, mouse) AT NO CHARGE.  Dispose of DVD players, VCRs, audio components and other small electronics for NO CHARGE. Disposal of additional computer systems is $5.00 each. The fee to dispose of televisions and microwaves is $5.00 each ($20.00 fee for big screen TVs).

Electronic devices often contain lead, PCBs and other hazardous materials which require special handling. Many landfills will not accept these items. The Nebraska Loess Hills RC&D Council, Lower Elkhorn NRD, the Papio-Missouri River NRD and the City of West Point are sponsoring this event so people can dispose of these items conveniently while protecting our environment.  Funding for the free portion of this event is provided through the Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grant Program, Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality.  For more information contact Jean Schultz at the Nebraska Loess Hills RC&D Council office (402)685-4020 or jschultz@nlhrcd.org.
