Ila Jean Engdahl, age 87, of Oakland, Nebraska passed away Monday, October 10, 2016, at Oakland Mercy Hospital in Oakland. 

Memorial services will be on  Saturday, October 15, 2016, 10:30 a.m. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland. 

Private burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Oakland.  There is no visitation.  Memorials are suggested to the Oakland Mercy Hospital or Donor’s Choice.

Delores R. Carlson, 87 years of Oakland, Nebraska, passed away Friday, September 23, 2016, at Oakland Heights in Oakland.

Visitation will be held Mon., Sept. 26th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Oakland. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Visitation will also be held Tues. at the church one hour prior to the service.

Charles “Chuck” Frahm, 81, of Oakland NE


Charles “Chuck” Frahm, 81 years, of Norfolk, Nebraska, formerly of Oakland, Nebraska, passed away Sunday, August 21, 2016 at Norfolk Veteran’s Home in Norfolk with his wife by his side.  Memorial Service will be Tuesday, August 30, 2016, 10:30 a.m. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland.  Military Honors  will be conducted at the church following the service.   No Visitation.  Burial will be at a later date.  Memorials to the family for later designation.

Charles Edward Frahm was born August 19, 1935, in West Point, Nebraska, to Mary (Strehle) and Hugo Frahm.  Charles grew up on a farm near Lyons, Nebraska, where he attended country school and later graduated from Lyons Public High School. Charles entered into the United States Army and served from 1958-1959. He was a Lifetime Member of the American Legion and VFW.

Upon discharge from the Army, Charles came back home, and soon met his bride-to-be, Clara Huntemann. They married on May 21, 1961 at Grace Lutheran Church in West Point.

The couple moved to a farm west of Oakland, Nebraska and later moved to a farm near Rosalie, Nebraska. Finally, they settled near Oakland on the family farm, a home to them for 50 years.

Charles farmed and drove truck in those early years. Eventually they had three children, Debra, Bryan and Jay. In 2005, Charles purchased Harms Equipment. His love of selling and talking with farmers was his true joy! Charles was active in Bethany Lutheran Church during his many years in Lyons. Later, the couple made First Evangelical Lutheran Church their church home.

Charles had a great faith in God and his country. His love for his family was what really drove him to work so hard for so long.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hugo; mother, Mary; stepfather, Clarence Monson; grandson, Garrett Frahm.

His legacy includes his wife, Clara; daughter, Debra (Glen) Galloway of Wayne, IL; sons, Bryan Frahm of Oakland, Jay (Michelle) Frahm of Parks, AZ; grandsons, Wesley Watson of Sedona, AZ, Carson Frahm of Hot Springs, SD, Jace Frahm of Parks; sister, Rosemary (Paul) Kai of Oakland; brother, Jim Frahm of Lincoln, NE.

Jeffrey Dean Novotny, 56, of Oakland NE


Jeffrey Dean Novotny was born to Donald and Dorothy (Hensley) Novotny on February 1, 1960 in Omaha, Nebraska. He passed away Friday, August 5, 2016, after battling cancer, at his home in Oakland, Nebraska, at the age of 56 years.

Jeffrey graduated from Northwest High School in Omaha. He married Janine Schwarting on June 22, 1996. They made their home in Oakland, where he was self-employed in the home remodeling business. He has made his mark in many homes, and in many lives, through his quality craftsmanship.

He is survived by his wife, Janine; parents, Donald and Dorothy of Oakland; daughters, Savannah Farrell of Des Moines, IA, Lisa (Brian) Petersen of Oakland, Tina Newton of Oakland; siblings, Scott (Sharon) Novotny of Chesapeake, VA, Amy (Randy) Vanbeek of Omaha, Dan Novotny of Omaha; eight grandchildren who loved and adored their Grandpa; and 5 nieces and nephews.

Visitation is Tues., Aug. 9th from 5:00-7:00 at Pelan Funeral Services in Oakland. Family will be receiving friends during this time.

The Funeral Service is Wed., Aug. 10th at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Oakland. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.

Donna F. Baldwin, 80, of Oakland NE


Donna F. Baldwin, 80 years, of Oakland, Nebraska, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2016 at the Oakland Mercy Hospital in Oakland after a short fight with cancer.

Donna was born August 1, 1935 to Vernie and Elsie (Youngren) Peterson in Oakland. She was baptized, confirmed, and a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland.

She attended Oakland Public Schools, graduating in 1952. She attended Wayne State Teachers College, and taught one year at Payne School in Cuming County.

On November 27, 1959 Donna married Harold L. Baldwin in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, and taught one year at Omaha Central Elementary in Omaha, Nebraska. She then taught 13 years in country schools in Burt and Cuming counties. She received her BA in Counseling from Midland College in 1974, and her Masters in Counseling from Wayne State in 1983. She worked for the Department of Social Services for 24 years, retiring in 2000.

After retiring, Donna remained very active. She played golf, planted flowers, played cards, made the occasional trip to the casino and really enjoyed her time spent having coffee with friends. Her true love was sports; she was a loyal supporter of Oakland-Craig athletics for many years. She also followed her nieces’ and nephews’ sporting events. She loved Nebraska athletics and the Kansas City Royals.

Donna volunteered in many organizations. She was on the Oakland Heights Board, Friends of Oakland Foundation Board, Oakland Mercy Hospital Foundation Board, a past member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church Council, a member of the Dorcas Society, Oakland Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, and Eastern Star Chapter 216 in Herman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; son, Tory; sister, Phyliss; brothers, Mel Worth and Elton Peterson.

She is survived by her sons, Jeff and Rex Baldwin both of Oakland; Rex’s special friend, Deb Nygren of Mead, NE; sister, Janice (Don) Schneir of Beatrice, NE.

Visitation will be held Wed., July 20th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Oakland. Family will be receiving friends during this time.

The Funeral Service will be Thurs., July 21st at 10:30 a.m. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Burial is in the Oakland Cemetery.

Marlin D. Nissen, 84, of Oakland NE


Marlin D. Nissen, 84 year, of Oakland, Nebraska, went to be with his Savior Jesus on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Colonial Haven Nursing Home in Beemer, Nebraska.

Marlin was born October 7, 1931 in Oakland to Bodolf and Frances (Olson) Nissen. Marlin was baptized August 29, 1943 and was confirmed March 30, 1947 at the Westside Methodist Church. He graduated from the eighth grade at Rock School District #48, Oakland, in 1945. Marlin served in the US Army from 1952 through 1954, and was stationed in Southern Germany. In 1955, Marlin married LaVonne Peterson of Lyons, Nebraska. They farmed and raised livestock for many years. In 1968, a repair business was added to the farming, along with custom combining, and operating the township road grader. Marlin went full-time with his repair shop, Nissen Repair, in 1973 and continued his work until his retirement in 2013. He also maintained an Archer oil dealership for over 30 years.

Marlin was an active member of Salem Covenant Church and taught Adult Sunday School and served as Deacon. He served the community as chairman on the township board for 24 years and sexton of the cemetery at Westside for many years. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post #5543.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, LeRoy, Danny and Myron; brothers-in-law, Duane and Arnie; sister-in-law, Prudy.

He is survived by his wife, LaVonne; son, Lynn (Brenda); grandsons, Morgan and Andrew; brother, Loy (Shirley); sisters, Leona (Harold) Hultquist, Ila Laaker, Inez Diers, June (Jim) Wood.

Visitation is Tues., July 12th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Oakland. Family will be receiving friends.

The Funeral Service is Wed., July 13th at 10:30 a.m. at Salem Covenant Church.

Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service. Military Honors will be held at the cemetery.

Burial is at the Westside Cemetery.
