Cathryn Belle (Ensminger) Hugg, 91, of Tekamah NE


Cathryn Belle (Ensminger) Huff was born May 31, 1925 in Aurora, Nebraska to Joseph and Delta (Williamson) Ensminger. She passed away August 21, 2016 at Oakland Heights Nursing Home in Oakland, Nebraska, at 91 years.

Cathy grew up on a farm near Emerson, Nebraska and graduated from Emerson High School. On June 8, 1944 she married her high school sweetheart, Charles Huff. They were married for 63 years at the time of his death, making Tekamah, Nebraska their home for most of those years. Cathy was a resident of Tekamah for 59 years, until failing health caused her to move to the Oakland Heights facility.

Cathy was a member of the United Methodist Church in Tekamah. She was a long time member of the Church Circle. She was also active in the VFW Auxiliary. Her hobbies included golf, knitting and gardening. She and Charles were avid ballroom dancers throughout their marriage.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles and her son, David.

She is survived by her daughter, Kay Gibbs (Ron) Kommers of Oakland; son, Van (Cathi) of Atlanta, GA; daughter-in-law, Mary Christensen of Kansas City MO; sister, Beth Petersen of Moville, IA; seven grandchildren; Eric, Clay, Rodney, Darci, Danette, Sam, and Katie; nine great grand children; Rachel, Ian, Autumn, Jaysen, Ben, Vivi, Kendall, Roslyn, and Corin; a host of nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Service is Thurs., Aug 25th at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Tekamah, NE. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service.

Burial is in the Tekamah Cemetery at a later date.

Eva Marie (Sok) Spenner, 81, of Tekamah NE


Eva Marie (Sok) Spenner, age 81, of Tekamah, Nebraska passed away on August 21, 2016 at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.  Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, August 27, 2016, 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Tekamah.  Burial will be in the Tekamah Cemetery.  Memorial visitation will be held Friday from 5-7 p.m. with family receiving friends and Vigil service at 7 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Tekamah.  Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.  Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah is in charge of arrangements.

Eva Marie (Sok) Spenner was born to John and Anna (Augustyn) Sok December 10, 1934 in rural Valley County, Nebraska.  She attended school at District 47 in Valley County. On January 16, 1946, the family moved to Burt County, Nebraska, where Eva attended school and graduated from Tekamah High School in 1952.

On April 16, 1956, Eva and Bernard Spenner were united in marriage at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Tekamah, Nebraska. To this union were born four children, Joseph, David, Lou and Donna. They made their home and raised their children on a farm west of Tekamah, where Eva was a homemaker, bookkeeper, gardener, housekeeper and caretaker of the elderly.

Eva was an active member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Altar Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bernard; brothers, Henry Sok, Steve Sok; sister, Lillian (Sok) Vetick.

She is survived by her sons, Joseph Spenner of Jacksonville, FL, David Spenner of Bellevue, NE; daughters, Lou (Bill) Calhoon of Stanton, NE, Donna Spenner of Tekamah; two grandsons; two granddaughters; 3 great grandsons; sisters, Josephine Marquardt of Omaha, Adelene Laetsch of Atkinson, NE, Marie Gill of Tekamah; many nieces and nephews.

John Davis Dewhurst III, 50, of Herman NE


John Davis Dewhurst III was born April 9, 1966 to John and Marian (Jensen) Dewhurst in Blair, Nebraska. He passed away, Saturday, August 6, 2016 at his home in Herman.

He graduated from Oak Park High School in Kansas City, Missouri. Shortly after graduation John enlisted and served in the US Navy from 1984 to 1988.

John enjoyed camping, drives in the country, spending time with his nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews, the Huskers, NASCAR and aircraft carriers. He really loved to fish, but hated taking the fish off the hook.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Marian; and niece, Alonna.

John is survived by his father, John (Cindy) of Tekamah; daughter, Kierstin Thornsberry of Missouri; sisters: Kay (John) Shreve of Prairie Grove, AR, Tonya of Bellevue, NE, Terra Braniff of Blair, NE, Cassy (Phil) Meideros of Omaha; brother, Joshua (Amy) McClusky of Kansas City, MO; numerus nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Visitation will be held on Fri., Aug. 12th from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at the Herman Legion Hall in Herman NE. A Memorial Service will follow at 2:00 p.m. also at the Herman Legion Hall.

Burial is in the Herman Cemetery.

Betty Trotter, 87, of Herman NE


Betty Jane (Corbin) Trotter was born March 2, 1929 in rural Tekamah, Nebraska to Leo F. and Eva Jane (Pratt) Corbin. She passed away Friday, July 29, 2016 at Oakland Heights Nursing Home in Oakland after complications from several falls.

Betty attended Tekamah schools and graduated from Tekamah High School in 1946. She attended one semester at Wayne State College before accepting a position at the First National Bank in Tekamah and was later employed by the Herman State Bank. She and William Russell Trotter were married October 14, 1951. They had three children: Barbara Jane, Brenda Jo and David Russell. Betty and Russell lived in Herman for over 60 years before moving to Oakland Heights Assisted Living in the spring of 2016.

She joined the First Presbyterian Church of Tekamah on April 1st, 1945. She had been active in Presbyterian Women, taught Sunday school, and had helped with the after school kids’ Logos program. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Herman Legion Auxiliary and the local Betty Club. She was also involved in book club, bridge clubs, and the Chatt Senior Center. She enjoyed writing notes and sending cards to friends & family, knitting, reading, family vacations in Minnesota in the summers and wintering in Texas with Russell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Leo F. Corbin, Jr.

Survivors include her husband, Russell; daughters: Barbara (Steve) Frank of Westmoreland, KS, Brenda of Oakland, NE; son, David (Sara) of Rochester, MN; grandchildren: Joshua (Kylee) Frank of Manhattan, KS, Jordan (Diane) Frank of Myrtle Point, OR, John Frank and Rachel Frank of Westmoreland, Samuel and Lucas Trotter of Rochester, MN; and great-granddaughter, Emery Eden Frank of Manhattan, KS.

The Memorial Service will be held on Sat., Aug. 6th at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Tekamah NE.

A Private Family Burial will take place at the Herman Cemetery.

Alta P. Townsend, 74, of Tekamah NE


Alta P. Townsend was born January 7 1942 in Falls of Rough Kentucky to Henry and Sarah (Daughtry) Carmen. She went to be with the Lord June 25, 2016 at her home in Tekamah.

Alta married Gary Townsend in June 1966 and together they raised 7 children. The family moved to Tekamah in September 1974. Alta worked at the nursing home before returning to school graduating from Tekamah High school in 1975 and continued her education at Metropolitan Community College.

Throughout her life she enjoyed working various jobs in healthcare and customer service. She was also a member of fraternal order of eagles. She enjoyed baking, canning and quilting. The greatest love in her life was her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She enjoyed going to concerts, ball games and swim meets over the years. She also enjoyed attending church. Alta was friends to so many people.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Pauline Johnson; sons: Norman, George and infant son James; daughter, Theanna; daughter in law, Carol; and three infant grandchildren: Nathan, Jamie and Daniel.

She is survived by her sons: Leroy Townsend of Tekamah, NE, Robert (Kelly) Camron of Omaha, NE; daughters: Udith (Art) Johnson of Craig, NE, Linda (Joe) Sergio of Sherman TX; brother, Raymond Courtney of Morganfield, KY; 23 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held Thurs., June 30th at 12:00 p.m. at the Faith Family Baptist Church in Tekamah.

Burial is in the Tekamah Cemetery.

Verna N. Weatherly, age 95, of Tekamah, Nebraska passed away Monday, June 13, 2016 at the Golden Living Center in Tekamah.  Memorial services will be on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Tekamah.  Burial will  be in the Tekamah Cemetery, Tekamah, Nebraska.  Memorial visitation will be held Friday, June 17th, from 5-6:30 p.m. with family receiving friends and Eastern Star Service at 6:30 p.m. all at Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah.  Memorials to the family to be designated at a later date  Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah is in charge of arrangements.

Verna Nylene Weatherly was born to Chancey and Alpharetta (Irish) Underwood in Belgrade, Nebraska on February 26, 1921.
Verna grew up in the Belgrade area and graduated from Belgrade High school in 1938. On November 5, 1941, Verna married Robert “Bob” Weatherly in Belgrade. They lived most of their lives on farms around the Tekamah area and moved into Tekamah in 1975. She spent numerous hours answering phones and taking messages at Weatherly Bros Irrigation.

Verna was a member of the United Methodist Church of Tekamah, Tekamah Chapter 131 Order of the Eastern Star of Nebraska. She was a leader for various 4-H groups and a loyal supporter of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Bob and Verna loved traveling with friends and family to Texas and Las Vegas; they had numerous stories of the adventures.

Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bob” Weatherly; daughter, Patricia Weatherly Nicholls; daughter-in-law, Mary Jane “Janie” (Mullins) Weatherly, grandson Michael Weatherly; sister, Aila Ahlers; brother, Claire Underwood; brothers-in-law, Walt Ahlers and Vernon Hansen.

Verna is survived by her sons, Robert K. ( Beth) Weatherly, Jr. of Fremont, NE and Jerry L. Weatherly of Bellevue, NE; three grandchildren, Mark (Amanda) Nicholls of Irving, TX, Bruce (Teresa) Nicholls of Claremore, OK,  Jill C. Weatherly of Lincoln, NE; five great grandchildren, Tyler and Grant Nicholls of Claremore, Tori, Micah and Laura Nicholls of Irving. Verna is also survived by brothers, C. Harold (Emma) Underwood of Redding, CA and Duane (Shirley) Underwood of Dry Ridge, KY; sisters, Janet Hansen of Harvard, NE and Jean Craig of California; many nieces and nephews.
