Doris Anderson, 98, of Oakland NE

Doris Matilda Sophia Anderson was born to Elof and Elsa (Johnson) Johnson on a farm in rural Oakland, NE on December 21, 1916.  At the age of 8, her cousin Linnea came to live with their family; she often said this was the best thing that ever happened to either of them, since then they each had a sister. She attended District 13 School, graduating from Oakland High School in 1934.

On February 5, 1940, Doris married Harold Anderson. The first year they were married Doris and Harold picked the corn crop by hand because they were too poor to buy machinery. In 1942, they welcomed their first of 5 daughters, Barbara, followed by Eileen, Carole, Jane, and Laurie. Doris and Harold lived on the farm south of Oakland for 42 years, until they moved to town (Oakland) in 1982.  Doris lived in the same house on Davis Avenue which was the gathering place for Sunday morning “coffee” until she moved to Oakland Heights Assisted Living in 2011.  She resided at Oakland Heights until the time of her death on March 10, 2015. Doris was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Oakland, and was very active in Harmony Club, Dorcas, Garden Club, and LCW. She was active on the farm, helping Harold when needed, and was an exceptional homemaker and cook.  Her family loved staying at Grandma’s for Sunday dinner, and was happy to continue going to Grandma’s for “coffee” even up until last week.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Anderson (1985); daughter and son-in-law, Barbara (1990) and Frank Furneisen (2009); son-in-law, Gene Johnson (2014); grandson, Scott Wright (2014); and cousin, Linnea Swift (2013)
