Helen K. Heineman, 101, of Pender, NE, passed away Thursday, April 7, 2016 at Legacy Garden Rehabilitation and Living Center in Pender. Funeral services will be Monday, April 11, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender; Pastor Miles Ruch will be officiating. The visitation will be Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery in Pender. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Pender is in charge of the arrangements.

Helen Katherine Vosteen was born on March 30, 1915 in rural Cuming County, Nebraska, the oldest of three children to Dick and Mary (Vogt) Vosteen. Helen was united in marriage to Harvey Heineman at the home of her parents on January 31, 1937. Together they farmed north of Pender until May 1976 when they moved into Pender. On December 28, 1978, Harvey died in a tractor accident. She was an active member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Women’s Circle, Alter Guild, mailing, quilting and Sunday School. Helen also liked to travel, and had visited all fifty states. Most of all she enjoyed the time she was able to spend with her loving grandchildren.

Grateful for sharing her life are her three children; Gary (Mary) Heineman of Sloan, IA; Leann (Dennis) Jeppson of Wahoo, NE and Don Heineman and special friend Rae Brown of Pender. She is also survived by ten grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Delta Vosteen of Pender; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her baby daughter, Karen Kay in November 1954; husband, Harvey in December 28, 1978; father, Dick Vosteen in November 1981; mother, Mary (Vogt) Vosteen in June 1985; brothers, Alvin Vosteen in August 2001 and Walter Vosteen in December 2004; brothers-in-law Rudy Wagner in June 1991 and James Kleffner in August 2009; sisters-in-law Betty Vosteen in April 1996, Irene Wagner in August 2006 and Esther Kleffner in November 2011; granddaughter, Marsha Heineman Hanly in May 2012; and daughter-in-law, Sharon (Simonsen) Heineman in September 2014.

Zeltha M. (Nelson) Larson, 89, of Pender NE


Zeltha M. (Nelson) Larson, 89, of Pender, Nebraska died on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, Nebraska. Memorial services for Zeltha will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Pender; Pastor Dan Springer will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Friday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Pender. Burial will be in the Rosehill Cemetery of Pender. Memorials are suggested to family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender, NE.

Zeltha was born on May 21, 1925 in Oakland, Nebraska, the daughter of Rudalth and Elzada (Close) Nelson. After graduating from West Point High School in 1943, Zeltha attended Wayne State Teachers College. She taught rural school west of Pender at District #4 and #5. On March 4, 1945, she was united in marriage to Clarence L. Larson. To this union four children were born: Shirley, Lyle, Deborah, and Myra. The couple farmed in the Pender area. Zeltha enjoyed to garden and paint and was an active member of her church serving on the Ladies Aid.

She is survived by her son Lyle (Karen) Larson of Pender, NE, daughters Deborah (Craig) Luehr of Kenya, Africa and Shirley (Bill) Prabulos of Lincoln, NE, four grandchildren, three step grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Zeltha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clarence, daughter Myra Larson, sister Muriel Pearson and brothers Harold and Erwin Nelson.

Robert Leonard, 91 of Pender, NE


Robert Leonard, 91, of Pender, Nebraska died on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender. Funeral services for Bob will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church; Pastor Miles Ruch will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Monday from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home of Pender. The family will be present to greet friends from 4:30 until 7:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in the Rosehill Cemetery of Pender. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designations.

Robert (Bob) Leonard was born in Wayne County, Nebraska on December 20, 1922, the son of Carl and Anna (Bressler) Leonard. He attended Pleasant Valley Church until 1956, when he became a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender. Bob attended District #1 Country School (also known as “Bloody One”) in Wayne County, graduating from Wakefield High School in 1941. Bob farmed with his family until entering the United States Navy in 1944. He proudly served his country on a minesweeper as a Fireman 1st Class during WW II. After being discharged in 1946, Bob returned home, where he farmed with his family. It was during this time he met Marilyn Kai of Pender. Bob and Marilyn were married in Walthill, Nebraska on April 2, 1950. They lived on the farmstead they built until 2000, when they retired and moved to Pender. Bob and Marilyn were blessed with four children: Logene, Kris, Roger and Mike.

During his lifetime, he enjoyed many things. Some of his accomplishments include, serving on District #15 School board, a longtime member of the Thurston American Legion, where he served as commander for a time, and as a member of the Pender VFW. Bob was an award winning wine connoisseur, which brought happiness to many people. For a time, he shared his passion for woodworking with his son Mike, operating the “Slack-Time Shoppe”. You could often find him in the Sandhills of Nebraska doing his part in the day to day operations of a cattle herd. Many lambs were nurtured by his caring hands. He will be missed by anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Robert is survived by his wife Marilyn of Pender, NE, daughters Logene (Chuck) Bach of Thurston, NE, Kris (Brad) Stewart of Wayne, NE, sons Roger (Deb) Leonard of Pender, Mike (Becky) Leonard of Wayne, NE, eleven grandchildren sixteen great grandchildren, a brother Samuel Leonard of Wayne, NE and numerous nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Anna and in-laws Art and Florence Kai, a sister Marge Hyde and three brothers Cornelius “Bub”, Jim and Jeff Leonard, and sisters-in-law Frances Leonard and Ruth Leonard, brothers-in-law Webb Hyde, LeRoy Giese, and Norman Surber, three nieces Barb Leonard, Tina Prokop, Shelley Prokop, and a great granddaughter Maria Leonard.
