Joyce J. Purucker, 84, of Hubbard NE


Joyce J. Purucker, 84, of rural Hubbard, NE died on Monday, June 13, 2016 at her home. Funeral services for Joyce will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson with Pastor Gretchen Ritola and Vicar Rebecca Truland officiating. The visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the church with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery of Emerson. Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Emerson is in charge of the arrangements.

Joyce was born on April 28, 1932 in Spencer, SD, the daughter of Albert and Ione (Horn) Adams. She attended Wayne State College in Wayne, NE, where she earned her teachers certification. She taught all grades at the Bell School southwest of Hubbard, NE. On October 9, 1953, Joyce was united in marriage to Billy Purucker in Homer, NE. The couple farmed in the Hubbard area until his death on September 25, 1993. She continued to live on the farm until her death.

She enjoyed quilting and coffee hour in Waterbury, and was active and enthusiastic about Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She enjoyed the county fairs, her pets, and livestock.

Joyce is survived by her sons, Alan Lynn (Cindy) Purucker of Ponca, NE and Rory D. (Audrey) Purucker of Hubbard, NE; daughter, JoAnn (Henry) Kim of Vermillion, SD; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Roger (Shirley) Adams of Cairo, NE; sisters, Bev Scheer of Moville, IA, Lois Adams of Waterbury, NE, Leona Olson of Sioux City, IA, Margie Stark of Hubbard, NE, Barb (Dale) Strivens of Allen, NE, and Linda (Jerry) Gieger of Sioux City, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Billy; sisters, Bernice Fendrick and Rayme Moore; and one brother, Richard “Dick” Adams.

Earlyne Fayann (Frey) Tomlinson, 79, of Emerson, Nebraska passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at Legacy Garden Rehabilitation and Living Center in Pender, NE.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2016 at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson, NE; with Pastor Gretchen Ritola and Vicar Rebecca Truland officiating.

Private family burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Emerson, NE. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home.

Harlan Stark, 100, of Emerson NE


Harlan Stark, 100, of Emerson, Nebraska passed away Sunday, December 20, 2015 at Heritage of Emerson in Emerson, Nebraska. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson; with Pastor Gretchen Ritola officiating. Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at the church with a prayer service starting a 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Emerson. Memorials may be directed to St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Emerson.

Harlan was born December 27, 1914 in Emerson, NE to Arthur and Amanda (Schoening) Stark. He attended grade school in Emerson. On February 21, 1941, Harlan married Vivian Gradert in Emerson. The couple had two children. He farmed in the Emerson area until his retirement in 1979.

Harlan loved to be outdoors fishing, playing horseshoes, and gardening. He also enjoyed playing pool and playing cards, especially pitch. The family would like to thank the staff at Heritage of Emerson for their kindness and friendship shown to Harlan and his family over the past years.

He is survived by sons, Harvey Stark of Sioux City, IA, Dennis (Charlotte) Stark of West Des Moines, IA, five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vivian; and three brothers.

Violet I. (Sebade) Johnson, 96, of Pender NE


Violet I. (Sebade) Johnson, 96, of Pender, Nebraska died on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at Legacy Garden Nursing Home in Pender, Nebraska. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 6, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson; with Pastor Gretchen Ritola officiating. The visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Emerson. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender, NE.

Violet was born December 13, 1918 to Henry and Anna (Frey) Sebade on the family farm near Thurston, NE. She was baptized June 5, 1919 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson and was confirmed March 25, 1934. Violet graduated from Emerson High School in 1936. On February 19, 1941, she was united in marriage to Earl Johnson at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson. The couple farmed for many years near Thurston before retiring to Pender in 1981. She was a devoted farm wife. Violet was also a meat cutter at the Thurston Locker.

Violet was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson. She was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Alter Guild. She was also a member of the Happy Hour Extension Club and Pioneer Senior Center where she served on the board. Violet loved playing cards and enjoyed the Ladies Bridge Club. In her free time, Violet liked crocheting and embroidering. During Christmas time, she loved baking and sharing 100’s of batches of cookies. She loved caring for and being around her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Violet is survived by her sons, George (Marilyn) Johnson of Thurston, NE, Leon (Mary) Johnson of Lincoln, NE; sister; Esther Thomsen; brother, Densil (La Donna) Sebade; sister-in-law, Marlice Sebade; grandchildren, Daniel (Sheri) Johnson, Gale (Tabitha) Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Rebecca (Carl) Cederberg, Sara (Eric) Hunter and nine great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl; still born daughter, Karlo; brothers, Eugene (Maribelle) Sebade, Thomas Sebade; sister, Geraldine Zeisler; brothers-in-law, Donald Thomsen and Darrel Zeisler.
