Helen (Gaver) Hohenstein, 74, of Lyons NE

Helen (Gaver) Hohenstein was born June 24, 1942, outside of Tekamah, Nebraska, to Ernest and Frieda (Moeller) Gaver. She passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2016, at her granddaughter Ashley’s home. After a short battle with cancer, God called her home, at 74 years.
Helen attended District 29 School near Tekamah, and Tekamah High School for two years, before leaving to help on the family farm near Herman, Nebraska. She married Donald Updike of Lyons, Nebraska. To this union two children were born, Debbie and Duane. She later married Jerry Hohenstein of Craig, Nebraska. Helen enjoyed running a daycare out of her home for many years, and cooking for local nursing homes, before retiring.
Helen was very talented and enjoyed many crafts, including quilting and crocheting. She had a very caring heart and was concerned for others’ wellbeing. She loved her dog Ellie and enjoyed sitting outside with her watching the wildlife.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry; daughter, Debbie; sisters, Mabel Katt, Ruth Fisher, Ellen Boever; brother, Clinton Gaver.
Survivors include her son, Duane Updike of Casey, IA; sister, Lorena Haswell of Oxford, IA; brother, Dale (Vikki) Gaver of Blair, NE; grandchildren, Ashley (David) Schild, Joey Updike, Talon Trice, Blaine Hoyt, Jeg Updike; great-grandchildren; Alexia, David Jr. and Keira Schild; many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held Wed., Aug. 31st at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Lyons.
No visitation.
Burial is in the Tekamah Cemetery.
