Helpful Hints from Kat Country Hub Readers

I wish to start something new, and hopefully fun.

Everyone has a way they do things, such as making your own cleaning products, or how to get gum out of hair.

I would like everyone to submit your household hints. Any type of hints are welcome, from cleaning to cooking and everything in between.

I will submit the first one.

If your tube of mascara seems dried out, but there is still some left. there is a way to fix it. Put a few eye drops into the tube of mascara. Shake it up, and you will have useable mascara again! I have tried this and it does work.

Lets add some more. We can all learn something from each other.

Cute Kids Pictures

Reminder, today is the last day to get your cute kids pictures turned in to be posted in the paper next week.

I have received many great pictures and would love to see more!

HCI Awarded Region 4 Behavioral Health System Grant

Healthy Communities Initiative (HCI), a drug abuse prevention group that serves the counties of Burt, Cuming, Madison and Stanton in Nebraska, was recently awarded a Region 4 Behavioral Health System grant.

The focus of the new grant will be to implement the following programs:

  • LifeSkills Training program in two schools in the service area.  This is a program which teaches students how to make healthy choices and resist drug use and other unsafe behaviors.
  • College Alcohol Profile (CAP) and eCheck will be used at Northeast Community College (NECC) for new freshman students living on campus.  These are internet tools used to prevent alcohol and marijuana usage.
  • Responsible Beverage Server Training classes will be offered to licensed alcohol sellers and their staff every three months or more often if needed.
  • WhyTry for 4th-6th grade students in Madison and Norfolk as voluntary after school program.  This program encourages students to choose responsible behaviors including choosing to be alcohol and drug free.

For more information about the programs or to get involved with Healthy Communities Initiative, please call Kathy Becker, HCI Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator at 402-529-2233.

2013 LDNE graduate Jacob Maslonka

Jacob is the fourth installment of what 2013 graduates are doing now, and how things are going for them.

This summer was probably one of my best summers. I worked part time at the Branding Iron and spent a lot of time with friends and family. It will be different not seeing them all the time, especially when I leave for college. My future plans are to graduate from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in the field of Biological Sciences with a career goal that I am still unsure of. Growing up in a town like Lyons was beneficial to me in every way. We have a great school with faculty that cares about the students and a great community to live in. It helped me grow into the person I am today.
