Annabelle M. Kai, 76, of Bancroft, NE passed away Friday, March 21, 2014 at Pender Community Hospital in Pender, NE. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Bancroft, NE; with Pastor Charity Potter officiating. Burial will be in the Bancroft Cemetery in Bancroft, NE. Visitation will be held Monday, March 24, 2014 from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Bancroft, NE. Memorials may be given to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Bancroft, NE.

Annabelle was born on January 7, 1938 at home northeast of Pender to Herman and Edna (Lawton) Kai. She attended grade school at District 33 near Pender, NE, graduating from Pender High School in 1956. She moved with the family to Bancroft, NE that same year. After graduation, she held various Jobs. Annabelle worked at Jim’s Market for several years, and as a grounds keeper for the John G. Neihardt Center until her retirement.

She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bancroft and a loyal Nebraska Cornhusker football fan, attending many games until her health would no longer allow.

Annabelle is survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law: August (Janet) Kai of Aurelia, IA, Paul (Rosemary) Kai of Oakland, NE, Glenn (Roberta) Kai of Bancroft, NE and Robert (Glenda) Kai of Lincoln, NE, a sister-in-law Connie Kai of Omaha, NE and her sisters Ruby Duncan of Emerson, NE and Sibyl Kai of Bancroft, NE, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Floyd and Chuck Kai, a sister Alyce Schleusener, brother-in-law Roy Duncan and Arthur Schleusener, three nephews and a niece.

Robert Leonard, 91 of Pender, NE


Robert Leonard, 91, of Pender, Nebraska died on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender. Funeral services for Bob will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church; Pastor Miles Ruch will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Monday from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home of Pender. The family will be present to greet friends from 4:30 until 7:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in the Rosehill Cemetery of Pender. Robert (Bob) Leonard was born in Wayne County, Nebraska on December 20, 1922, the son of Carl and Anna (Bressler) Leonard. He attended Pleasant Valley Church until 1956, when he became a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender. Bob attended District #1 Country School (also known as “Bloody One”) in Wayne County, graduating from Wakefield High School in 1941. Bob farmed with his family until entering the United States Navy in 1944. He proudly served his country on a minesweeper as a Fireman 1st Class during WW II. After being discharged in 1946, Bob returned home, where he farmed with his family. It was during this time he met Marilyn Kai of Pender. Bob and Marilyn were married in Walthill, Nebraska on April 2, 1950. They lived on the farmstead they built until 2000, when they retired and moved to Pender. Bob and Marilyn were blessed with four children: Logene, Kris, Roger and Mike.

During his lifetime, he enjoyed many things. Some of his accomplishments include, serving on District #15 School board, a longtime member of the Thurston American Legion, where he served as commander for a time, and as a member of the Pender VFW. Bob was an award winning wine connoisseur, which brought happiness to many people. For a time, he shared his passion for woodworking with his son Mike, operating the “Slack-Time Shoppe”. You could often find him in the Sandhills of Nebraska doing his part in the day to day operations of a cattle herd. Many lambs were nurtured by his caring hands. He will be missed by anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Robert is survived by his wife Marilyn of Pender, NE, daughters Logene (Chuck) Bach of Thurston, NE, Kris (Brad) Stewart of Wayne, NE, sons Roger (Deb) Leonard of Pender, Mike (Becky) Leonard of Wayne, NE, eleven grandchildren sixteen great grandchildren, a brother Samuel Leonard of Wayne, NE and numerous nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Anna and in-laws Art and Florence Kai, a sister Marge Hyde and three brothers Cornelius “Bub”, Jim and Jeff Leonard, and sisters-in-law Frances Leonard and Ruth Leonard, brothers-in-law Webb Hyde, LeRoy Giese, and Norman Surber, three nieces Barb Leonard, Tina Prokop, Shelley Prokop, and a great granddaughter Maria Leonard.

John was born on July 15, 1972 in Pender, NE, the son of LeRoy and Charmaine (Fuller) Lahmann. He graduated from Walthill High School in 1991. After graduation he worked for Cooney Fertilizer and as a Rural Mail Carrier for the Post Office. John enjoyed playing cards with his friends, hunting, fishing and watching Nebraska Football. He was a member of the Rural Carrier Union and Trinity Lutheran Church. What John enjoyed most in his life were his children Aliayeh and Jayden. They were his pride and joy.

 

He is survived by his daughter Aliayeh and son Jayden of Dakota City, NE, his mother Charmaine Lahmann of Walthill, NE, sisters Virginia Lahmann Kiviranta of Omaha, NE, Teressa Lahmann of Walthill, NE, half sisters Kim Chlupacek of Dewitt, NE and Wendy Peterson of Rosalie, NE. John is also survived by a niece, three nephews, three great nephews and two great nieces.

 

John was preceded in death by his father LeRoy and his grandparents A. John and Naomi Fuller and August Lahmann, Hazel Lahmann Schultz and step grandfather Carl Schultz.

Verle Henry Vogler, 91 of Herman, NE


Verle Henry Vogler was born July 18, 1922, the youngest of 8 children, to Henry Carl and Amelia (Kraft) Vogler on the family farm in Louisville, Nebraska.  He passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at the Memorial Community Hospital in Blair, Nebraska.

Verle was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Louisville, one mile from the family home.

He went to grade school with a horse and buggy 2 ½ miles and took the drinking water along because the well at school was bad.  He drove to high school, in Louisville, in a 1928 Chevy car and graduated in 1939.  On October 1, 1942, he enlisted in the US Army Corp.  He was a P51 fighter plane mechanic and was honorably discharged on February 28, 1946.

On August 21, 1948, Verle married Betty Jean Thornton in Omaha, Nebraska and raised three children: Douglas, Darlene and Pamela.

He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, loved nature, loved farming, loved the land, an avid reader and enjoyed watching men’s and women’s college sports.

He lived on a farm all his life, in Louisville, from 1948-1952, on a farm by Springfield, NE, from 1952-1968, on a farm by Tekamah, NE from 1968-1994 and finally on an acreage by Herman to present time.  He was a lifelong farmer and a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Blair.

Verle was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Herman and Willis; sisters, Pauline Kupke, Hilda Vogler, Iola Wendt, Lonella Koterzina and Elda Waracka.

Verle is survived by his three children, Douglas of Tekamah, Darlene (Steve) Bacon of Pleasant Hill, IA, Pamela Vogler-Benson of Omaha, NE; four grandchildren, Dylan and Dalton Benson of Omaha, Heather Vogler-Fischer of Omaha, Teresa Braniff of Tekamah; six great grandchildren, Alivia, Ethan, Julianna, Lukus, Thomas and Savannah Braniff; 10 nieces and nephews.

JERRY C. PALMER, 82 years, of Tekamah, Nebraska

Jerry Charles Palmer was born March 2, 1932 in Tekamah, Nebraska, to Lloyd and Alvera (Loftman) Palmer. He died Wednesday, March 5, 2014, in Omaha, Nebraska, surrounded by his family. His parents preceded him in death.

Jerry grew up on his family’s farm and attended rural grade school in Arizona Township. He graduated from Tekamah High School in 1950. After two years in the United States Army, he graduated in 1956 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

On Nov. 14, 1954, Jerry married Jerris Ann Harmon in Ashland, NE. The couple had three daughters, Jayne Palmer of Omaha, Mindy Major (Barry) of Omaha and Sarah Frye (Dave) of Houston, TX.

Jerry was a farmer and hog producer with his brother Jack. He was active in East Central Pork Producers (past President), N.F.O. (past President) and Farmers Union

Ever active in the community, Jerry succeeded his father as a director on the Burt County Public Power Board, a position he held from 1968 to the time of his death. He also served on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Board from 1991 through 2008. He was a lifelong, faithful and active member of the United Methodist Church of Tekamah. He and Jerris volunteered with the community food bank for 16 years.

Jerry never knew a stranger, always seeking to make new friendships while maintaining old ones. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jerris; three daughters and six grandchildren: Natasha Smith (Warren), Ryan Major (Samantha), Brett Major, Jamie Frye, Alex Frye and Andrew Keil; his brother Jack Palmer and his wife, Donna. He was a proud and devoted grandpa. The community, his friends and family will miss him greatly.

Tracy C. Schmedding, 85, of Winnebago, Nebraska passed away Monday, March 3, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA. Funeral Mass will be Friday, March 7, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Winnebago, NE; Father Tom Bauwens will be officiating. Tracy was born to Charles and Theresia (Rotert) Schmedding on January 12, 1929 on a farm near Emerson, NE. They later moved to a farm in the Walthill/Winnebago area where he first attended a country school until 8th grade and then graduated from Winnebago High School in 1947. At the age of 25, Tracy spent two years in Germany serving in the tank division of the Army. Upon his return, he continued to farm. On June 28, 1959, Tracy married Marilyn Phillips. To this union, three children were born: Stan, Jayne, and Gina.

Tracy farmed with his son, Stan, up until the time of his disability. He was also a lifetime member of the National Farmers Organization.

Tracy enjoyed singing and playing the guitar with friends and family and was also a member of a small band. He entertained several crowds at the local county fairs with this brother Ivan. Tracy loved the time spent with his grandkids and great grandkids. Tracy is survived by his wife, Marilyn, son, Stan and wife JoAnn of Walthill, NE, daughter, Jayne and husband Steve of Knoxville, TN, and daughter Gina of North Sioux City, SD, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
