Alta P. Townsend, 74, of Tekamah NE


Alta P. Townsend was born January 7 1942 in Falls of Rough Kentucky to Henry and Sarah (Daughtry) Carmen. She went to be with the Lord June 25, 2016 at her home in Tekamah.

Alta married Gary Townsend in June 1966 and together they raised 7 children. The family moved to Tekamah in September 1974. Alta worked at the nursing home before returning to school graduating from Tekamah High school in 1975 and continued her education at Metropolitan Community College.

Throughout her life she enjoyed working various jobs in healthcare and customer service. She was also a member of fraternal order of eagles. She enjoyed baking, canning and quilting. The greatest love in her life was her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She enjoyed going to concerts, ball games and swim meets over the years. She also enjoyed attending church. Alta was friends to so many people.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Pauline Johnson; sons: Norman, George and infant son James; daughter, Theanna; daughter in law, Carol; and three infant grandchildren: Nathan, Jamie and Daniel.

She is survived by her sons: Leroy Townsend of Tekamah, NE, Robert (Kelly) Camron of Omaha, NE; daughters: Udith (Art) Johnson of Craig, NE, Linda (Joe) Sergio of Sherman TX; brother, Raymond Courtney of Morganfield, KY; 23 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held Thurs., June 30th at 12:00 p.m. at the Faith Family Baptist Church in Tekamah.

Burial is in the Tekamah Cemetery.

Memorials suggested to the family for designation at a later time.

JoAnn Rager, 82, of Emerson NE


JoAnn Rager, 82, of Emerson, NE died on Monday, June 20, 2016 at Heritage of Emerson. Funeral services for JoAnn will be held on Friday, June 24, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson with Vicar Rebecca Truland officiating. The visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery of Emerson. Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Emerson is in charge of the arrangements.

JoAnn was born April 21, 1934 in Walthill, Nebraska, the daughter of Lanie and Artie Lee (Deckard) Nunn. She attended school at Walthill, Nebraska. JoAnn was married to Robert (Bob) Rager in Dakota City, Nebraska on July 18, 1953. To this union of marriage they had eight great children.

JoAnn worked for Waldbaum’s, Automatic Equipment, and also drove school bus for Emerson-Hubbard schools. She was a member of the Emerson Firemen’s Auxiliary for several years. She enjoyed baking, cooking, watching her children play sports, keeping book at softball games and following her daughters around watching them umpire. And later in life, watching Downton Abbey, putting puzzles together and going to the casinos. But most of all, she enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

JoAnn is survived by three sons; Butch (Teresa) of Thayer, Iowa, Bob (Betty) and Bill (Rhonda) both of Emerson, Nebraska; five daughters; twins Lela Rager of Emerson, Nebraska and Lila (Bob) Hadcock of Decatur, Nebraska, Patty (Ken) Pojar of South Sioux City, Nebraska, Jackie (Rick) Claassen of Dakota City, Nebraska and Paula (Karen Mackey) of Sioux City, Iowa. JoAnn is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren and sister, Ella Petersen of North Bend, Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bob in 2009, three grandchildren: Anthony E Kubik, Joshua R Rager and April Joy Claassen, her parents and ten siblings.

Verna N. Weatherly, age 95, of Tekamah, Nebraska passed away Monday, June 13, 2016 at the Golden Living Center in Tekamah.  Memorial services will be on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Tekamah.  Burial will  be in the Tekamah Cemetery, Tekamah, Nebraska.  Memorial visitation will be held Friday, June 17th, from 5-6:30 p.m. with family receiving friends and Eastern Star Service at 6:30 p.m. all at Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah.  Memorials to the family to be designated at a later date  Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah is in charge of arrangements.

Verna Nylene Weatherly was born to Chancey and Alpharetta (Irish) Underwood in Belgrade, Nebraska on February 26, 1921.
Verna grew up in the Belgrade area and graduated from Belgrade High school in 1938. On November 5, 1941, Verna married Robert “Bob” Weatherly in Belgrade. They lived most of their lives on farms around the Tekamah area and moved into Tekamah in 1975. She spent numerous hours answering phones and taking messages at Weatherly Bros Irrigation.

Verna was a member of the United Methodist Church of Tekamah, Tekamah Chapter 131 Order of the Eastern Star of Nebraska. She was a leader for various 4-H groups and a loyal supporter of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Bob and Verna loved traveling with friends and family to Texas and Las Vegas; they had numerous stories of the adventures.

Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bob” Weatherly; daughter, Patricia Weatherly Nicholls; daughter-in-law, Mary Jane “Janie” (Mullins) Weatherly, grandson Michael Weatherly; sister, Aila Ahlers; brother, Claire Underwood; brothers-in-law, Walt Ahlers and Vernon Hansen.

Verna is survived by her sons, Robert K. ( Beth) Weatherly, Jr. of Fremont, NE and Jerry L. Weatherly of Bellevue, NE; three grandchildren, Mark (Amanda) Nicholls of Irving, TX, Bruce (Teresa) Nicholls of Claremore, OK,  Jill C. Weatherly of Lincoln, NE; five great grandchildren, Tyler and Grant Nicholls of Claremore, Tori, Micah and Laura Nicholls of Irving. Verna is also survived by brothers, C. Harold (Emma) Underwood of Redding, CA and Duane (Shirley) Underwood of Dry Ridge, KY; sisters, Janet Hansen of Harvard, NE and Jean Craig of California; many nieces and nephews.

Joyce J. Purucker, 84, of rural Hubbard, NE died on Monday, June 13, 2016 at her home. Funeral services for Joyce will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson with Pastor Gretchen Ritola and Vicar Rebecca Truland officiating. The visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the church with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery of Emerson. Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Emerson is in charge of the arrangements.

Joyce was born on April 28, 1932 in Spencer, SD, the daughter of Albert and Ione (Horn) Adams. She attended Wayne State College in Wayne, NE, where she earned her teachers certification. She taught all grades at the Bell School southwest of Hubbard, NE. On October 9, 1953, Joyce was united in marriage to Billy Purucker in Homer, NE. The couple farmed in the Hubbard area until his death on September 25, 1993. She continued to live on the farm until her death.

She enjoyed quilting and coffee hour in Waterbury, and was active and enthusiastic about Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She enjoyed the county fairs, her pets, and livestock.

Joyce is survived by her sons, Alan Lynn (Cindy) Purucker of Ponca, NE and Rory D. (Audrey) Purucker of Hubbard, NE; daughter, JoAnn (Henry) Kim of Vermillion, SD; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Roger (Shirley) Adams of Cairo, NE; sisters, Bev Scheer of Moville, IA, Lois Adams of Waterbury, NE, Leona Olson of Sioux City, IA, Margie Stark of Hubbard, NE, Barb (Dale) Strivens of Allen, NE, and Linda (Jerry) Gieger of Sioux City, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Billy; sisters, Bernice Fendrick and Rayme Moore; and one brother, Richard “Dick” Adams.

Ada Belle (Palmer) Hansen, 95, of Tekamah NE


Ada Belle (Palmer) Hansen was born September 29, 1920 in Tekamah, Nebraska, to Otto and Ethel (Choate) Palmer. She passed away Saturday, June 11, 2016 at the Golden Living Center in Tekamah.

Ada attended elementary school at Arizona Center District #3 near her farm home northeast of Tekamah and graduated from Tekamah High School in 1937. She and Roger Hansen were married February 11, 1939. They had three sons: Larry Eugene, Randall Clark and Robert Kent. They farmed until 1960 whenthey moved into Tekamah.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Magnolia Rebekah Lodge and served on the Board of the Chatt Senior Center. She worked at the switchboard of Northwestern Bell Telephone until they went to dial phones. She was the Deputy Burt County Assessor in 1967 and later became County Assessor until 1969. She then became the office manager at Burt County Public Power and retired on January 1, 1988.

She enjoyed china painting, bowling and playing bridge. In later years, she enjoyed her association with friends at the Chatt Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roger; sisters, Marietta Hennig and Vera Baker; and infant great-grandson, Brayden Tracy.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law: Larry (Sandra) Hansen of Fremont, NE, Randy (Mary) Hansen of Spokane, WA, Kent (Charlotte) Hansen of Tekamah; niece, Donna (Hennig) Yergler of Ankeny, IA; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren.

The Memorial Service is Mon., June 20th at 10;00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Tekamah. There won’t be a visitation.

There will be a private family burial.

Memorials suggested to the Orville and Willa Chatt Senior Citizen Center.
