Esther M. Watkins, 83, of Hubbard, Nebraska died on Friday, January 15, 2016 at Regency Square Nursing Home in South Sioux City, NE. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at 10:30 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emerson, Father Gerald Leise will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Monday, January 18, 2016 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary service at 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emerson, NE. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Emerson, NE. Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Emerson is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Siouxland, Queen of Peace and Ella Watkins Fund.

Esther was born on July 6, 1932 in Emerson, NE, the daughter of Thomas and Lena (Hoeck) Belt. Esther was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. After graduating from High School in Emerson, she was united in marriage to Charles Watkins on December 29, 1951 in Emerson, NE. The couple made their home in Hubbard, raising their children. Esther enjoyed embroidering, making quilts, stamp and coin collecting, and traveling throughout the United States. She was crazy about baseball games, a 4-H leader, softball coach and enjoyed working with her flowers and watching the birds and squirrels. Most of all she cherished the time spent with her family.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, an officer of the Legion Auxiliary, Harty McNally in Jackson, NE for 25 years, a Senior Homemaker and won the Good Neighbor Award in 1984.

Esther is survived by her children; sons: Daniel & Sue of Suquamish, WA , William of North Sioux City, SD, James & Donell of Hubbard, NE. daughters: Kathleen Straube of Lincoln, NE, Barb Hoyt of Sioux City, IA, Patty & Todd Anderson of Doniphan, NE, Sharon & Jim Harral of Hubbard, NE, Joann & Dean Peters of Omaha, NE, Pam & Randy Colwell of South Sioux City, NE, Lisa & Bill Reppert of Pender, NE. She is also survived by her 29 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles, infant sons Charles L. and Ronald A. Watkins, grandchildren: Joseph Harral and Alicia Anderson and a great granddaughter Sabrina Beck, 3 brothers and 2 sisters and an infant brother.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson; Pastor Gretchen Ritola will be officiating. Leonard was born September 21, 1922 to William and Ruby (Rogers) Gutzmann in Hornick, IA. In 1944 he graduated from Emerson High School. Leonard married Donna Lou Jackson on June 3, 1950 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson, NE; to this union, four children were born. The couple farmed near Emerson until 1992. Leonard has been a long time member of the Masonic Lodge. He loved to travel, fish, and spend time with his family.

He is survived by his sons, Daniel Gutzmann of Emerson, NE, Joe (Diane) Guzmann of Emerson, NE; daughter, Diane Ruzicka of Emerson, NE; sisters, Violet Albrecht of Emerson, NE, Bonnie Daum of Hornick, IA; eight grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

Leonard is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Donna Lou; daughter, Patsy Lou; brothers, William, Leslie, and Lewis; son-in-law, Marvin Ruzicka, Jr.; and daughter-in-law, Johnene Gutzmann.

Marcella was born January 21, 1929 in Rosalie, NE to Ferd and Adella (Fabry) Novak. She graduated from Rosalie High School in 1946. She graduated from Wayne Teachers College and taught country school north of Rosalie. On January 16, 1947, she was united in marriage to Wilbur Fuchser, the couple had six children. Marcella was a lifelong resident of Walthill where she was very active at Trinity Lutheran Church. She was involved in every aspect of farm life, and helped where she was needed. Marcella was known around the area for her cakes for any occasion. Marcella was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and loved spending time with her family.

Marcella is survived by her husband, Wilbur Fuchser of Walthill, NE; five sons, Steve (Ann) Fuscher of Denver, CO, Terry Lee Fuchser of Chattanooga. TN, Duane (Jeanne) Fuchser of Porter, TX, Larry (Pam) Fuscher of Oceanside, CA, and Tom Fuchser of Walthill, NE, Ron (Sandy) Bruno of Chattanooga, TN; brother, Le Roy Novak; sisters, Lillian Radtke and Frances Dorau; 13 grandchildren; and 28 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Edwin Lee, Richard, Louis, Lester, and Gary; three sisters, Helen, Dorothy, Jennie, and one daughter, Sandy Fuchser Bruno.

Harriet was born October 10, 1932 to Paul W. and Elsie (Riddiough) Andrew in Randolph, NE. She graduated from Randolph High School in 1950 and received a teaching degree from Wayne Teachers College in 1951. Harriet married Clayton Meyer in 1952, the couple had six children. Harriet was a member of the Light of the World Gospel Church and the Senior Center. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling, and reading. Harriet loved life, her family, and the Lord.

She is survived by her sons, Greg (Debbie) Meyer of Decatur, NE, Jeff Meyer of Granite Falls, WA, Clay Meyer (Viola Burkett) of Hastings, NE, Kip Meyer (Jenny Louis) of Elkhorn, NE; daughter Cristi (Tom) Baumert of Elkhorn, NE; sisters, Pauline Collier of Norfolk, NE, Judy Loofe of Wakefield, NE; brothers, Gilbert Andrew of Norfolk, NE, Don Andrew of Randolph, NE, 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Kenneth W. Hartwig, 82, of Pender NE


Kenneth W. Hartwig, 82 of Pender, Nebraska fought a courageous battle against cancer and lost the fight on Thursday, November 19, 2015 at UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City, IA. Memorial services for Ken will be held on Monday, November 23, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender; Pastor Miles Ruch will be officiating. The visitation will begin one hour prior to the service on Monday. Burial will be at a later date at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Cemetery near Pender. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Pender is in charge of the arrangements.

Ken was born on July 12, 1933 at the Dorothy Picotte Memorial Hospital in Walthill, NE, the son of William and Alice (Einemann) Hartwig. In 1950 he graduated from Walthill High School. Shortly after graduation he joined the United States Army and served in Korea. On October 21, 1956, he was united in marriage to Vivian Pieper. To this union four children were born: Katherine, Sheryl, Christine and William. In the early 1970s, Ken became owner operator of the garbage business in Pender. He also drove the school bus, worked as a janitor at the Pender High School and was an associate realtor with NE Nebraska Realty. The family moved into their current residence in 1978.

Ken was a collector of many things. He enjoyed fishing, morel mushroom hunting, attending auctions and old cars. He was a member of the Pender V.F.W, the American Legion, serving as Commander, President of the Nebraska Token Club, member of the Classic Car Club of Onawa and a lifelong member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. What he enjoyed most was spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Vivian of Pender, daughters: Katherine (Earl) Snyder of Sioux City, IA, Sheryl (Donovan) Ehrman of Greeley, CO, Christine Glissman of Pender and a son William (Karen) Hartwig of Fremont, NE. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Lisa (James) Glissman-Mayner, Emily Glissman, Quinn Ehrman, Earl “Alex” Snyder, Kathryn Ehrman, Hannah (Seth) DeMoss, Noel Johnson, Autumn Johnson, and three great grandchildren: Derek, Pheobe and Mia Glissman-Mayner, sister Karolyn Sartin of Ringgold, GA; brother Willis (Bettty) Hartwig of Longmont, CO, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and former son-in-law Brad Glissman.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson Brian Weston Glissman.
