Come to the Fair

By Mary Loftis, Extension Associate

Come to the Fair!

Come one, come all and “Enjoy the Ride” to the “Best Show on Burt County Dirt!”

How’s that for combining a couple good county fair themes? The Burt County Fair is set to officially begin Friday, August 4th and will run until Tuesday, August 8th on the Burt County Fairgrounds in Oakland. Check out the event schedule on the Burt County Fair http://www.burtcountyfair.net website and take part in the local fun, food and friends at the fair!

4-H Scavenger Hunt

The Burt County 4-H Council is again sponsoring the very successful 4-H Scavenger Hunt they started last year. Youth ages 5-18 are invited to come to the 4-H Building on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, August 5-7 to sign in to get a 4-H Scavenger Hunt question sheet. Then explore the fairgrounds looking for answers to the questions with your family.

When you’ve completed the scavenger hunt come back to the 4-H Building and turn I your sheet. Each youth will receive 5 free carnival ride tickets and a chance to spin the big 4-H prize wheel! Additional prizes include gift certificates to the 4-H Kitchen, additional carnival tickets, and other 4-H and UNL promotional items. It’s free, it’s fun and it helps everyone learn a little more about the fair and 4-H! (Youth may only participate in the scavenger hunt once for prizes, but energetic participants can do a daily hunt just for the fun of it!) Spread the word – this activity is for all youth attending the fair!

Live-Streaming from the Fair

The Burt County Fair Foundation is trying something new this year…they are adding the technology and equipment to live-stream the livestock shows. All the technical details are being worked out on it at this moment. If you’re interested, or have family at a distance that would like to see some of the shows (especially in the arena) have them go to the Burt County Fair website at: www.burtcountyfair.net and look for a link.

4-H Rocket Launch

The 4-H Rocket Launch was a real BLAST last week with 14 4-H members participating. Comments during the event were entertaining at the least. One parent made the comment that “rocketry keeps you humble” …no matter how good your rocket looks or how often it’s launched without a hitch something can always spoil that “perfect launch”. It can also be very aerobic as a group search walked a quarter mile across the sod field and 22 rows deep into the corn field to help find a rocket! It’s also a religious experience as you’re praying the rocket will launch (and that it will be found!)

Yes, there were a few failed launches, but everyone did get their rocket into the air and all were recovered.

Results of the contest are as follows:

Purple Ribbons:

Don’t forget to come to the Vet’s Building in Oakland this Saturday, July 29 at 8:00 to help get the rest of the wonderful 4-H fruit pies made. Cherry, peach and apricot pies will be made since the apple, strawberry rhubarb and rhubarb pies were completed last week. Fruit Cups will be made after lunch at the 4-H Kitchen. All help is appreciated!

Fairgrounds Clean-up

Thanks to sixty-six 4-H members, leaders, families and friends, the Burt County Fairgrounds got a good cleaning Sunday afternoon. The group made quick work of all the projects on the list and then enjoyed a meal sponsored by the Burt County Fair Foundation as their thank you. You all make our county fair very special and it is much appreciated!

Burt County Fair 4-H Pie Day

Elijah Larson was anxious to start learning how to make a pie at the 4-H Pie Day last week in Tekamah. With the help of his mom, Connie Larson he did a very nice job!
He and anyone else can get even more practice by attending Pie Day II in Oakland at the Vet’s Building in Oakland on Saturday, July 29. Everyone’s welcome to help out! Cherry, peach and apricot pies will be made at the second pie day starting at 8:00 along with fruit cups at the 4-H Kitchen in the early afternoon. Photo Credit/Mary Loftis.

Hot Dogs Recalled

Marathon Enterprises Inc., a Bronx, N.Y. establishment, is recalling approximately 7,196,084 pounds of hot dog products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically bone fragments, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The beef and pork hot dog and sausage items were produced on various dates between March 17, 2017 and July 4, 2017. A number of products are subject to recall.

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 8864” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail and institutional locations nationwide.

The problem was discovered through FSIS’ Consumer Compliant Monitoring System (CCMS) on July 10, 2017. Complaints stated that extraneous material, specifically pieces of bone, were found within the product.

There has been one reported minor oral injury associated with consumption of this product. FSIS has received no additional reports of injury or illness from consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at http://www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact John Terminello, Consumer Relations, at 1-800-SABRETT Monday thru Friday 8:30am to 5:15pm. Media with questions about the recall can contact Boyd Adelman, President, at 1-800-SABRETT Monday thru Friday 8:30am to 5:15pm.

Man Hospitalized After Boating Accident

A 40-year-old man was hospitalized when a personal watercraft he was operating collided with another personal watercraft July 15 at Calamus State Recreation Area.

A 29-year-old man, who was operating the second personal watercraft, was charged with boating under the influence and reckless operation in connection with the incident, which happened just before 6 p.m. west of Little York Point on Calamus Reservoir.

Witnesses told investigators that both operators were weaving their craft back and forth when they collided. The injured man transported to Valley County Hospital in Ord and later flown by helicopter to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission conservation officers and the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident.

A Minute With the Mayor

A Minute with the Mayor by Lyons Mayor Andy Fuston

June, 2017

Summer is here.  Mother Nature was being kind to us there in May but turned up the burners a little here in June.  It’s keeping the pool busy anyway!  We’re off to a great start to the pool season.  We had to replace the chemical controller right at the start of the season.  The repair work we did last year wasn’t working so we ended up replacing the existing unit.  We’re back to stable Ph levels which help keep the pool on an even keel.  We’ve also been able to hire enough lifeguards to get us through the summer.  We got our insurance bill for up-coming year (starts July 1st).  Premiums when up about $3000.00 to $105,000.00 but the replacement costs for certain areas went up also.  We currently insure almost $18 million in property, automobiles and equipment.

The council talked about those buildings on Main Street that received yellow repair placards.  The city is very much willing to work with property owners as long as they show progress in repairing the portions of their buildings identified as requiring attention.  In addition to those buildings needing repair work, the council discussed the bowling alley and its timeline for demolition.  An interested party stepped forward wanting some time to explore the idea of establishing another business in the building, which the council agreed too, but since the council meeting the interested party has had difficulty locating the owner of the building and the demolition company was ready to move forward with the tear down.  In the best interest of the surrounding buildings, the council is proceeding with the demolition.

The city has completed the tarring of cracks around town that it had budgeted for this year.  More to come next year.  We also continue to work through the electrical upgrades for the Brehmer Mfg. expansion.  A representative from Habitat for Humanity was at the council meeting to discuss doing some work in Lyons in August.  They are looking for a couple of houses in close proximity to each other that could use a little TLC.  They are planning a “Rock the Block” party on August 26th from 10 am to 3 pm to provide home repair and restoration services.  Anyone is welcome to come and help and volunteer that day.  More information will be coming in August.  Dan Westerhold is replacing Sandy Posvar on the Planning Commission Board.  Thank you Sandy for your many years of service to the city and welcome aboard Dan.  Logan Valley Baptist Church has submitted a building permit for a new building and concrete work located on South 4th Street.  We’re excited to have them put down roots with a new church.  The 4th of July will be here before we know it and with that comes the Bluegrass celebration.  You’ve probably seen the fliers posted all over town listing the day’s events.  I hope to see all of you there.  The day will end, of course, with our annual fireworks display.

The pool will be open that day from noon to 3 pm and it will be free admission that day.  Talking about things that put us in a festive mood, what do you think about the new banners that are lining Main Street?  Aren’t they fantastic!  You can thank your Community Club for those.  You’ll also be able to thank them for the new Christmas light displays that will adorn the light poles this winter.  The Lyons Community Club is able to provide those wonderful “extras” for the community thanks to your support of their fundraisers they do throughout the year (like the 4th of July celebration).

Thank you Community Club for all your hard work and willingness to keep Lyons a great community to live, work and play in!  That’s all I have for now.  Stay cool and talk to you soon.

Mayor Andy Fuston
